All Mountain Technologies is excited to be one of the sponsor for the Battery Recycle Challenge at Red Sandstone Elementary school.
There’s no excuse to pitch your old batteries in the trash can. Instead send them off with your favorite Red Sandstone student who will be sure to recycle them. And these old batteries just might help that student win a pizza party from Pazzo’s Pizzeria.
Red Sandstone Elementary School grades kindergarten through fifth grade have challenged each other to see which class can get the most batteries saved from the landfills and into the proper recycling channels.
The challenge started April 25, with the first weigh-in on May 1. In that first week alone, the school collectively netted 216 pounds of old batteries that might’ve ended up in our landfill. Now at the end of 2 weeks, the total is over 300 pounds. It’s reverse the Biggest Loser. The school wants the numbers on the scale to go up with the culminating weigh in on May 20.
All batteries collected will be recycled at the Eagle County Household Hazardous Waste Facility. One of the Sponsors, All Mountain Technologies will be on hand on Friday to help transport the last collection of batteries.
“I organized a Household Battery Recycle Challenge for my kids school, Red Sandstone Elementary, to raise awareness of battery recycling in Eagle County,” explains Alan Sandberg of The Parents Handbook and Value Media Marketing, “I am amazed by the response.”
Ace Hardware in West Vail will continue to collect and recycle used batteries and cell phones after May 20.
Not sure what batteries can be recycled? Nickel cadmium (found in cordless tools), nickel metal hydride (found in cell phones and cordless tools), lithium ion (usually from laptops and cell phones) and alkaline batteries all need to be recycled. Batteries that need to be recycled but are NOT accepted at the school are lead acid batteries. These should be brought directly to the Eagle County Household Hazardous Waste facility in Wolcott.
The school kids are also collecting old cell phones for recycling, but they will not be included in the weigh-in. However, it’s just as important to keep old phones out of our landfills.
“I love seeing the kids learn how to recycle, and having them really embrace the contest. We could not have done it without our sponsors,” Alan adds.
